Before Present explores the relationship between ancient forms of divination and contemporary applications of predictive technologies. Although their origins and mainstream use are centuries apart, both forms of prediction stem from a long-standing desire to know and forecast the future. This project began with the question: what would a contemporary divination device look like if we could apply contemporary forecasting tools and programs to ancient forms of knowing.
This body of work applies an element of machine learning and prediction to create new divination objects, shown alongside actual mirrors. With the added use of timed UV lights, viewers are invited to discern and pull out the images they see, encouraging a space for further speculation and reflection.
